Alsou Ralifovna Abramova was born on 27 June 1983. At 5 years old Alsou asked her parents for a piano. She was then allowed to attend a private music school. After living in Moscow due to her father's business, she then moved to New York City and later to the UK where she entered a private architecture college. In 1998, at the wedding of her brother Marat, Alsou sat at the grand piano and sang 'I will always love you'. After this private performance her family began to persuade her to pursue a professional singing career.
She competed in the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 in which she came in second place with the song 'Solo'. She continued to record music both in English and in Russian, which earned her lots of success. Alsou hosted the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 held in Moscow.
Rather surprisingly, no Eurovision performer has ever been born on 29 July as far as we know - nor has anyone ever passed away on this date. In that case, there's always the next best thing: a composer. And in 1931 on this day, a very renowned composer was born: Kjell Oddvar Karlsen, a Norwegian band leader, composer, arranger, jazz pianist and organist, with a career spanning more than 60 years. Inspired by the Nat King Cole jazz ensembles from the time of World War II, he started his own orchestra at the age of 16 in 1947, The Syncopators Band, in Sarpsborg, and he soon became a central figure in the local jazz scene. His Kjell Karlsen Orchestra performed the music in the national final of the Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix in 1966, 1967 and 1968. Karlsen also was the composer of 'Kom sol, kom regn', which represented Norway in 1962, as performed by Inger Jacobsen.
Katerina "Katy" Garbi was born on 8 June 1961. As a singer she is mainly popular in Greece and Cyprus, with some popularity in Turkey as well. Her career has spanned over 20 years and is marked by several multi-platinum releases. Garbi participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 1993 for Greece with the song 'Ellada, Hora Tou Fotos', taking ninth place.The CD-single was actually released all over Europe, making it the first Greek entry to achieve this. Paul Layton was born as Paul Martin Layton on 4 August 1947. He studied acting, leaving school at fourteen to train at the Aida Foster Stage School. As a teenager he had parts in the films 'I Could Go on Singing' (with Judy Garland), and 'Beckett'; and television appearances in 'Dixon of Dock Green' and 'Emergency Ward 10' amongst the three hundred in which he had acted in by the age of seventeen. In 1969 he secured a recording contract. After some solo releases, Layton joined the New Seekers as a bassist. Despite some line-up changes, he has remained in the band to this day. In 1972, the New Seekers represented the United Kingdom with 'Beg steal or borrow', which ended in second place in a field of 18 competitors. The single went on to become a chart success throughout Europe. The band even recorded a German version of the song for the German market.
